The giant
Test: Elmar Fetscher
Blackstone, currently the world's most successful grill brand, is looking to establish its griddles (grill plates) in Europe following their huge success in the US. With its flagship 36" griddle grill station with air fryer, Blackstone is bringing a redesigned version of the US griddle to the European market. FIRE&FOOD reveals the details in this product review.
Data and assembly
The griddle package weighs over 80 kg. The powder-coated trolley is easy to assemble, and the pre-assembled gas grill unit is placed on top and secured in place in just a few simple steps. The large and heavy griddle pan measuring 55 x 91 cm is placed on top and the sturdy lid is screwed on – the assembly is almost complete. The most time-consuming part of the assembly is assembling the air fryer boxes. All fasteners and screws fit perfectly; consulting the assembly instructions was almost unnecessary. When fully assembled, the griddle has a span of 166 cm and a height of 110 cm to the top of the lid. The gas hose and pressure reducer are not included and must be purchased separately.
Operational
Before first use, the griddle must be seasoned (basic cleaning with soapy water, applying oil, and heating vigorously, repeating several times until a patina forms). Four stainless steel burners generate 17.5 kW of power. The maximum achievable temperature is almost 350 °C, which is perfect for quick frying. The adjustable burners allow you to set different temperature zones, allowing you to cook at low temperatures with the lid closed. The foldable side shelves have a comfortable working height of 89 cm. Two adjustable air fryers (100–260 °C) offer a good option for preparing side dishes, and another box can be used as a warming compartment (80 °C).
1. Four rod burners bring the griddle on tour.
2. Stable casters and each caster is equipped with a brake.
3. Sporty design of the fittings.
4. Triangular irons keep the large griddle in shape.
5. The burners produce a uniform flame pattern.
6. The griddle during seasoning. The longer the griddle is heated, the smaller the temperature difference from the center to the edges.
7. The gas bottle is positioned next to the griddle.
8. Crispy chicken wings from the air fryer.
Conclusion:
The Blackstone 36" griddle isn't just a grill. The numerous cooking options (cooking, roasting, sautéing) on the griddle and in the air fryer make it a truly outdoor kitchen. The griddle's large surface area is particularly impressive. The air fryer's inserts could be improved, and the instruction manual also has room to improve. Overall, the griddle feels very sturdy and is even suitable for professional use (restaurants/catering).
