The GRILLNINJAS® strengthen the nutritional competence of children and young people
For years, nutritionists have been complaining that our nutritional knowledge is no longer that great. Although cookbooks, virtual cooking courses on YouTube and cooking shows on TV are booming and the knowledge they contain is available every day, we seem to be less and less able or willing to put what we have learned into practice in our own kitchens.
At lunchtime, people quickly go to the canteen or the (fast food) restaurant around the corner or pick up the phone to satisfy their hunger with the offer of the nearest delivery service. This is a worrying development that not only leads to more fat around the hips for many people, but also deprives future generations of the opportunity to acquire healthy nutritional skills in a fun way, by imitating and trying things out. Yet for generations, cooking and eating together as a family has been one of the most beautiful memories that we carry with us from our childhood into adulthood.
Grilling is easy and healthy
The GRLLNINJAS ® are a nationwide non-profit initiative of the independent child and youth welfare service. They hold events for children and young people that are adapted to their age, where participants actively experience tips on healthy eating that can be easily implemented in everyday life and learn about food and its healthy use. Grilling together in particular offers an exciting change of pace for preparing a delicious, healthy meal. It also makes the children proud and increases their self-confidence when they are able to successfully wield the grill tongs themselves.
What began as a pilot project in the spring of 2019 at the Immenrode primary school has developed into a nationwide movement with events in kindergartens, schools, facilities for the disabled, city youth welfare services and other organizations and a team that has now grown to over 30 people.
